Subject:      Fishing and Petroleum Industries Join Forces to Launch ONE OCEAN

ST. JOHN’S — The province’s fishing and petroleum industries have joined forces in an effort to work together on issues of common concern.

The newly formed inter-industry organization ONE OCEAN will promote cooperation and understanding between the fishing and petroleum industries of Newfoundland and Labrador.

ONE OCEAN will work as a liaison between these two important industries that operate in a common marine environment. Both industries, and their continued growth, are crucial to the economy of the province. Led by an advisory board, the organization will work to enhance mutual knowledge and understanding.

The advisory board consists of representatives from both industries, the Fish, Food, and Allied Workers (FFAW/CAW), the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (FANL), and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). Dr. Arthur May will chair the advisory board. An executive director will be hired shortly to manage the day-to-day activities of the organization. The offices of ONE OCEAN will be located at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University (Marine Institute).
“This is an important step for the petroleum industry. Our marine environment is a critical resource and we’re looking forward to working with the fishing industry to share knowledge and expertise,” said Paul Barnes, Manager-Atlantic Canada of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP).

Reg Anstey, Secretary-Treasurer of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW/CAW), said that the two industries share a number of concerns. “Safety, for example, is a primary concern for both industries. In addition, our industries will face many more mutual challenges as we work together in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area.”

ONE OCEAN will also compile existing data on fish stocks and the possible effects of petroleum operations on them. Alastair O’Rielly, President of the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (FANL), is particularly interested in this approach. “It will provide both industries with a forum to share information at an early stage, and develop operational protocols to address issues which may arise,” he said.

ONE OCEAN was developed through consultation between representatives from both industries and conducted by the Marine Institute. Fred Way, Vice-Chairman of the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board said, “the institute’s contribution to this effort is a reflection of its understanding of, and commitment to, sustainable development of the province’s marine industry and resources.”
